Masks are used for different cultural need in different societies of the world. It can be identified that the cutting of the masks takes place under one technique. currently, the cutting of masks is done in the Ambalangoda area.
Kaduru and Rukkaththana wood are used for cutting masks. This is because the plant is light in weight and the Kaduru wood is not used for any other purpose. Also, Kaduru wood can be protected from any insect pests for about 300 years.
Several types of faces can be seen in the art of masks. Kolam faces, Sanni faces, Monster faces, Demon faces, Divine faces, Cobra faces can be seen. These faces have been used for drama and dance in the Kandyan, Low country and Sabaragamuwa traditions. sanniyakuma performed using these masks.
These masks depict different social levels and the lives of cure diseases in the past and later for entertainment. It is also used in home decoration today.
